1951 Spanish 1-Sheet

Something we haven't seen on the blog yet, original movie memorabilia from Spain!  I call this a 1-sheet, but it is really 70x100 cm, so more like 27x39.  I'm not sure what the Spanish call it, but we'll settle for Spanish 1-sheet until otherwise notified.

Signed in the lower right, MCP, this was the monograph for a trio of Spanish poster artists  - Ramon Marti, Josep Clave, and Hernan Pico - usually known for their film noir and action posters, guess they decided to lighten thing up in the studio they day they did this.

The art on this is similar to the American 40x60, but much nicer.  I just had this sent off for linen-backing, and will proudly hang it on my wall after having lived in a box for 14 years.

UPDATE:  I just received my poster back and it looks AMAZING - don't you?  Thanks to the folks at Poster Mountain for doing such a great job!  I plan to send a lot more of my posters their way for mounting and restoration.  You should too!

Palés Tweedle Figure

And the hits just keep on coming!  Another new figure discovered, this time from the Spanish company Palés.  A Tweedle!

And he looks good too.  Much better than all the other Palés figures we've seen so far.  This little guy still eludes me, but one day...

Palés Alice from Spain

I love the internet.  After posting the White Rabbit, I received an email from the collector in whose collection that figure resides.  He not only confirmed my belief that it is indeed Palés and the White Rabbit, but he sent a bunch of high resolution photos of his collection, including this Alice!!

While I'm the first to admit she is not very attractive, it is cool that they made a figure of her at all.  Now all I need to do is find her :-)  Oh, and check my previous posts on the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat for new and improved photos of those figures, plus a variation!  Thanks again Oli!

Palés White Rabbit - Maybe?

I may have discovered the existence of a new Palés figure from Alice in Wonderland - the White Rabbit.

I came across this photo of what I originally thought was Rufus from the Rescuers, but now I'm not so sure.  Rufus did wear spectacles, but did not wear a waistcoat and bow-tie, he wore a scarf.  Until a reference book or catalog shows up, I guess we'll never know.

Spanish Filmstrip Set - Cine NIC Sonoro

What a great toy this is.  This is a boxed set of 'filmstrips' of the Alice story from Spain.  Box graphics are a little crude, but wait till you see the insides!

This is one of many sets offered, this being set L (stock number 139-144).  There are a couple of other Disney sets in there as well, including Lady  and the Tramp, which probably dates this to 1955 since there is no Sleeping Beauty.

Inside are six individual boxes containing the filmstrips.  The inner boxes are generic, with what looks like a rubber stamp impression of the specific title.

Here's where it gets really interesting.  This filmstrips are really paper strips with drawing in two rows.  The action in each of the two rows is slightly different.  I've seen this kind of toy before, in fact I've seen Alice themed versions of this toy before, but not Disney.  Apparently the 'player' for this toy switches between the two rows creating a sort of animated effect.

I've attempted to reproduce what this effect would look like at a very slow pace (faster and I get a headache).

I was very excited when I got this, a complete set, woohoo! But sadly, my set is NOT complete, I have two copies of segment 6 and am missing segment 1. Oh well.

Little Golden Book - Alicia y el Conejo Blanco - Spain

Will the foreign Little Golden Books never cease?!  Another new discovery, this White Rabbit from Spain.  Part of the Pequeño Libro Dorado (little golden book) series, this is #3.  There are no other Alice titles listed in that series.

Looks like this White Rabbit is more like a Pink Rabbit, maybe he's blowing too hard on his trumpet.  Satchmo he ain't...

This edition resembles the French version, although the rendering on the French is much nicer.

Mystery Figures Identified

Thanks to Didier over at the Disney History blog for uncovering the source of these mystery figures. These were made by a Spanish company called Palés and are from 1969-1984. Be sure to look for his article on these Palés figures in Tomart when it comes out.

Big Golden Book - Spain

This is a new discovery for me, an edition of the Big Golden Book from Spain! This is from the Coleccion Galas Infantiles - which loosely translates to Child Gala Collection.

There are several differences in this book from most of the other editions of the BGB. First, it is soft cover rather than hard cover. Next, it is approximately half the size of the standard BGB. Third, it uses new and different cover art. And finally, the pages are not in correct story order. I originally thought that it might have been assembled incorrectly, but in fact not, as the pages are printed out of order.

Stay tuned, as we'll see this cover art again.

Spanish Cheshire Cat Figure

Next in the What Are They and Where Do They Come From series is this Chesire Cat, from the same unknown Spanish set as yesterday's King of Hearts figure.

As with the King, his name is incised on the back, Gato de los Deseos, which seems to translate to 'cat of desires'...sounds pretty kinky to me.

If anyone out there has information on this set or manufacturer, I would love to hear from you!

Spanish King of Hearts Figure

This post begins a series of unknown figures - at least to me. First up, this King of Hearts from Spain.

He's about 5 inches tall, and has his name incised on the back - Rey de Corazones.

When I first saw a picture of this I assumed it was a knock-off, but when I actually got one I discovered that it has a Disney copyright on the bottom. I am most curious to know more about this company and what all they produced. 'Productions' copyright puts this prior to 1986, but I'm guessing 1970s, probably coinciding with the '74 re-release.

UPDATE: This company has now been identified as Palés, and they are from 1969-1984.
