Swedish Trading Cards - 1000th POST!!

Wow.  I never thought I'd get to 1000 posts!  And it only took 7 years.  Let the fireworks commence!

I know essentially nothing about these, other than they appear to be Swedish (Alice i Underlandet), and that they are about the same size as a business card.  This first card has no number on the front, and the print of the copyright is totally different than all the rest, it might be from a different series.

This second card is fairly amusing, as it depicts Alice having a day of beauty with Minnie Mouse and Chip the chipmunk doing her hair and makeup.  You'd think she'd look better after all that work.  This is number 234.

Next is #315, featuring Alice talking to the Tulips.  I'm sure she could pick every one of them if she were her right size.

The Mad Tea Party with the Mad Hatter and March Hare is on #570, presenting Alice with her very own unbirthday cake.  You know today is my unbirthday too.

And lastly, #607, featuring art lifted from the Dell comic book Four Color 331.

I have no idea who made these, how many there are (although it appears to be a fairly huge number) and if they are all Alice or a variety of Disney characters, but in my 25 years of collecting these are the only 5 I've come across.  I welcome any information on these from anyone out there.

2013 Year in Review

This year was a sporadic one for the blog, but we covered some interesting topics.  The majority of the year was spent on animation art, in particular animation drawings. I even tried my hand at a little animation myself :-)

Greek Chocolate Trading Cards

Knock me over with a feather, I recently acquired this partial set of trading cards from Greece.  Premiums from a chocolate company called Melo (or more properly Μὲλο) these remind me of Sugar Daddy trading cards, only larger.

These have been removed from an album, presumably an album of Disney cards as I doubt there would have been an album in the 1970s featuring 70+ cards of just Alice, but I could be wrong (geez, I'd hate to try and track down that full set).  I've seen Melo albums on other topics, and they are pretty cool, usually the cards fit flush to one another on the page to make a larger picture, it could be the case here as well, if you notice that the backgrounds could merge together to form a larger tableau.  Let's hope a full set in album surfaces one day.

There may have been a couple of different variations, as I have also seen this variant of the Dodo card

UPDATE: I love the Internet. Just two days after posting this I received an email from a reader who shared more images, and information. The set was Disney, many characters, and at least 150 cards. The different sizes came about when the company changed the size of the chocolate bars in the mid 1970s.

So now we know the following list:

• 62 - Alice (probably the first card in the set)

I would speculate at a minimum the following:

• 64 - March Hare
• 65 - White Rabbit
• 70 - Walrus

1960s Sugar Daddy Alice Trading Card

This was a new one on me, I'd never heard of this before. This is a trading card from Sugar Daddy candy. While I have seen (and even remember getting) trading cards out of Sugar Daddy candies, I never knew there was a Disney series, nor an Alice in that series.

This Alice is card number 20 out of a set of 25 cards called Mickey Mouse and his Pals, series number 5. Don't know if this means 5th series of Mickey and pals, or 5th series overall.

I also don't have an exact date on this, but the art tells me that it is most likely from the 1960s. If anyone has details on this series or knows if there were other Alice characters from that series, I'd be grateful for that information.

Happy Easter - Donruss Disneyland Card #28

Happy Easter to all! It has been fairly traditional at Disneyland to use the White Rabbit and his mythical spouse to be the unofficial Easter mascots, along with the other Disney bunnies like Thumper and Brer Rabbit. They must be second cousins to the Easter Bunny.

As such, and oddly enough, they were immortalized in trading cards. This is card 28 of the Donruss Disneyland Tencennial trading card set from 1965, featuring Mr. and Mrs. Rabbit visiting the flower market hunting Easter eggs on Main Street, USA.

The above is the more common puzzle back, but there is also a blue back as seen below.

Italian Wührer Premium Trading Cards Series II

Today we have Series II of the Wuhrer premium trading cards. As with Series I it consists of a set of 6 cards illustrated with scens from the film in essentially film order, back containing a synopsis of the scene illustrated.

Card 1 features Alice getting ready to recite for the Caterpillar


Card 2 features the angry mother bird atop a giant Alice


Card 3 features the Mad Hatter drinking tea at the Mad Tea Party


Card 4 features the same image from the promotional postcard of the March Hare instructing Alice with the Mad Hatter in the background at the Mad Tea Party (two tea party scenes?! were's the Cheshire Cat?)


Card 5 features Alice and the Painter Cards painting the roses red


and Card 6 features the Queen of Hearts getting ready to let one fly during the croquet match.


There is also an album you could get to hold all your Wuhrer trading cards. There were a total of 12 series, the album held all 12 sets of 6 cards, for a total of 72 cards. I have only ever seen one (not in my collection), but I do have pictures of the cover and the Alice pages.

The album itself is fairly simple, just construction paper pages with slits cut to hold the corners of the cards.
